5. The Colosseum, Rome

The Colosseum is one of Rome’s most famous and popular tourist attractions, with its 80 arched entrances. It was commissioned in AD 72 by Emperor Vespian in the hope that by staging deadly gladiator and wild animal fights for public viewing, he would gain popularity. It’s located in the heart of the piazza del Colosseo on the site of Nero’s palace and is the largest amphitheatre in the world – estimated to be able to hold 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. One of nature’s greatest displays, the Northern lights – or aurora borealis – is normally seen in the Arctic regions. The natural light displays are caused by charged particles entering the earth’s atmosphere.
